Nestled near Bosque County, Texas, W4 Ranch is an iconic Hereford operation with deep roots. Established in 1961 by James Walker, the ranch has grown into more than 12,000 acres of prime grazing land. Today, under the stewardship of owner Joe Walker and with Jeff Chaffin as ranch manager, the ranch is embracing modern range management practices.
Aerial Application: Opening New Doors
For decades, the ranch relied on ground-based application and due to the rough country had very limited reach. Chaffin explains that while they always sprayed, they were limited. There were areas they simply couldn’t reach well or efficiently. That changed when Alligare’s James Jackson introduced them to David Seaton.
Pilot, David Seaton, of Seaton Aviation brought the capability to treat previously unreachable terrain. The ranch manager recalls, “Everything about helicopter spraying makes sense to me.” In just two days, they covered areas that would have taken far longer or been impossible with ground rigs. The aerial approach allowed them to target rough terrain and other sensitive areas with precision.
This switch has paid off. Chaffin says they now have, “more grass than ever before and better-quality pasture at that.”
The Power of Chemical Control
A part of W4’s progress has been their strong working relationship with Alligare. Chaffin credits the partnership for helping them make informed decisions and navigate the complexities of pasture management. He notes that the Alligare team, including James Jackson and Jeremy Stiles, doesn’t just offer products; they take the time to understand the ranch’s goals, challenges, and the way the land works. Together, they identify solutions that fit the ranch’s needs and support the long-term vision for the property.
At W4 Ranch, they have used a thoughtful chemical program tailored for long-term impact. One blend they applied was 16 oz. of Triumph® 22K with 0.5 oz. MSM 60 to secure residual control of woody species and broadleaf weeds. This approach helps suppress undesirable plants, giving forage room to thrive.
In the hay fields, they applied Panoramic® 2SL in February to combat Texas winter grass, a cool season grass, which had severely limited yields on warm season Bermuda. The results were dramatic; hay production, once very low, rebounded due to controlling Texas Winter grass that was putting limitations on desirable grass. That kind of improvement underscores the value of precise, well-chosen chemistry.
Ground + Aerial, Working in Harmony
W4 Ranch’s strategy isn’t just about aerial sprays. Ground applications remain essential, especially for targeted work in improved pastures. By combining both methods, they hit a sweet spot. This dual approach has helped the ranch reclaim pastures that were once overgrown. In one lease pasture along a highway, near a housing subdivision, Seaton laid down a flawless buffer line from the air, carefully respecting boundaries. On another pasture they cleared and re-seeded about five years ago, Chaffin says, “you can see how great it looks. The transformation has been nothing short of remarkable.”
Paying Off in Performance: Forage + Genetics + Gains
The impact goes beyond simply producing more grass. At W4 Ranch, cleaner forage, solid genetics, and increased grazing availability are working together to support strong calf performance and overall productivity. “If you are making more forage and it’s clean, plus good genetics, you can’t help but increase gains,” Chaffin says.
Their improved pasture quality, combined with a better breed-up, is contributing to stronger performance across the herd.
Stewardship at the Core
Ranch owner Joe Walker is passionate about being a steward of the land. For him, improving the property isn’t just a business decision, it’s a moral one. His father, James Walker, who purchased the original land back in 1961, laid the groundwork. Today, that legacy continues in how W4 Ranch invests in sustainable practices.
Chaffin echoes that sentiment: while his primary focus is cattle production, he leans on Alligare reps for technical pasture support. “I could spend hours online looking for all the technical information, but if you have a team you can trust, you can spend your time focused on other responsibilities,” he says, “I trust they will not oversell or undersell. They recommend what’s right, not what’s convenient.”
Why This Matters
The story of W4 Ranch isn’t just about a bigger, greener pasture, or even heavier calves. It’s about combining tradition with proven science, leveraging multiple methods of weed management with the right herbicide to build a more resilient, productive landscape. Their partnership with Alligare is a critical piece of that puzzle: not just in terms of products, but in having a trusted team with strong technical expertise.
In the end, the success of W4 Ranch is a testament to what happens when you invest strategically in your land and your people. With the right herbicide, the right approach, and a steady eye on stewardship, they have turned challenge into opportunity and laid the foundation for even better pastures in the years ahead.
